A Wedding Journey: Aqua Blue Bridal Shower (Part I – Family Style)

wedding journey
Note:  Originally, I hoped to be done writing all my “A Wedding Journey” posts within a year of my daughter & son-in-law’s wedding day.  However, due to unforeseen circumstances that arose this past year, I am behind on the posts, but please enjoy reading.

bridal shower ideas

Historically, wedding etiquette considered it poor taste for a mother to throw a bridal shower for her daughter.  It was looked down upon as a solicitation for gifts.  Times have changed and it is now acceptable for mothers to throw a bridal shower in honor of their daughters – the main reason being that guests invited to the shower are expected to bring a gift no matter who is hosting.

About a year before my daughter got married, a friend’s daughter got married.  My friend threw the bridal shower for her daughter.  She is one of four sisters, and it was agreed upon between them years before that each person would host the shower for their own children when getting married.

I was happy to hear this.  It made me more comfortable and confident with my own future game plan.  I didn’t plan on hosting my daughter’s showers, but I wanted to be very involved with some of the details.  I also wanted the bridal showers to take place in my own home.

aqua blue bridal shower

There were two bridal showers given in honor of my daughter – one with family and the other with friends.  Both were held in my home.  I was extremely fortunate that both showers occurred on the same weekend.  It greatly simplified my setup details and expenses.  The Family Bridal Shower (this one!) was on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

The Family Bridal Shower was hosted by my daughter’s aunts (my husband side).  All the aunts jointly host the bridal showers for the nieces (and future niece-in-laws) in the family.

THE INVITATION

One of the shower details I wanted control of was the invitations.  I love to do invitations.

My daughter is obsessed with shoes!  So, of course, her bridal shower invitation had to have a shoe on it.  I added silver glitter to the buckle and the heel of the shoe to give the invitation some extra bling.

A photo of the soon-to-be-married couple welcomed guests in my foyer.  My daughter decided her bridesmaids would carry pink bouquets so I used pink as one of the main flower colors for her shower.  The silver birds represent the love birds.

I found these vintage hand stamped spoons at a Nordstrom Wedding Suite.

MY TABLE

blue bridal shower ideas

There were 22 people invited to this shower.  I wanted everyone to be able to eat together in my dining room.  This meant squeezing everyone tightly around the table, but I felt the sacrifice for less elbow room was better than some guests being forced to eat at a “kids table”.

I rented silver chiavari chairs to make my dining room and the bridal shower look more elegant.  The narrower chiavari chairs also helped immensely with squeezing more places around my table.  Only 16 actually attended the shower which helped with spacing.

aqua bridals shower

The bridesmaids’ dress color was aqua.  So I incorporated aqua / blue into my table colors.  I used blue hydrangeas mixed with pink roses on the table (kept purposely low for conversations across the table).

I also found an inexpensive aqua fabric at Hobby Lobby.  The fabric color was actually a perfect match to the bridesmaids’ dress color.  Throughout the year before the wedding day, I carried a swatch of the aqua dress color in my purse.  I would highly recommend anyone planning a wedding to do this for the many wedding selections and decisions to be made.

As you can see, I used the fabric as a tablecloth.  I got this idea from my sister-in-law when she gave a Bridal Tea in honor of my daughter.  You can read about the Bridal Tea here.  The fabric was too thin and not wide enough for my table on its own so I laid it on top of one of my regular tablecloths.

bridal shower inspiration

I also rented silver plate chargers.

bridal shower ideas

Typical of the bridal showers given by our family (my husband’s side), lunch was served buffet style.  The food is provided by all the aunts.  Usually one aunt takes control and coordinates the food each person will bring to get a great bridal shower menu.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos of the food.

DINING ROOM CHEST

I also displayed many photos of my daughter in my kitchen and family room (where she would open the gifts).  I took existing photo frames and replaced the photos with pictures of my daughter (some of just her and some with others) – grade school photos, family vacation photos, holiday photos, etc. and, of course, some with her-then fiancé.

OTHER DETAILS

Some of the ideas I used for the shower were found on (where else but…) Pinterest.

One of the shower favors:

“A Lovely Mix” – White hot chocolate mix with a small whisk tied to it

I printed up my own label and glued it over the store’s label

The other shower favor:

“Truly cut out for each other” – A small heart-shaped cookie cutter with a sugar cookie recipe inside

I used a heart-shaped paper punch to cut out the opening on the front to make the recipe visible.

decorating for a bridal shower

I kept my table décor with a minimalist look, but certainly wanted to display my Wedding Day Couple Bride & Groom Lladro Figurine (that my mother gave me).

My daughter loves to play scrabble…

I also found aqua tulle (same color as the fabric) at Hobby Lobby.  I tied a big bow around the back of the chair for our bride-to-be.

BRIDAL SHOWER GOODIES

The aunts/hosts were so nice to order a cake from my daughter’s favorite bakery.  Yes, a piece of it was worth every calorie – Yummy

How Fab-u-lous is this aqua blue candy bar!!!

It was the brainstorm of the aunt (who coordinated all the hosting efforts).  She insisted on each aunt/host bringing only candies in certain colors.  She even made the aqua blue chocolate covered pretzels herself.  Awe-inspiring!

GIFT WRAPPING

I also love to wrap a pretty gift.  Here’s a peek at how I wrapped my daughter’s gift for the  shower.

A Wedding Journey is dedicated to my lovely daughter.  It was so much fun to be able to share this incredible time in your life.  I hope you always choose to dance.
And forever twirl in your dress~

“Autumn-Flavored” Book Club (Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania)

book club lunch ideas

A gal from my Book Club hosted a lovely fall lunch for our discussion this week.  Here’s a look at her autumn-flavored tablescape and lunch.

THE TABLESCAPE

beautiful fall table setting

Even with first glance, my eyes immediately glommed onto her gorgeous fall plates.  Sure enough, they were the same ones I have been crushing over at Williams-Sonoma  the past couple years.

Her table had the look and feel of autumn…Kudos to her teen granddaughter who played a major role in styling the table.

The piece of driftwood was found on a trip to Door County (Wisconsin).

The orange-colored pumpkin-shaped beads on top of the driftwood are actually vase filler beads just sitting on the wood (clever!).  Her pretty napkins are from a past trip to France.

Note the backs of her charming antique dining room chairs in the top photo.

DISCUSSION OF THE BOOK

Dead Wake book discussionOur book club read Erik Larson’s previous book, In the Garden of Beasts, several years ago.  I really enjoyed reading that book, and even found much of the information (& characters) in the book to be quite useful with subsequent reads about World War II.  Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about Dead Wake.  In general, I found this book to be too long and drawn out.

Overall, our book club rated Dead Wake about a 3 out of a 5 scale .  It is very clear Mr. Larson thoroughly researched the events for this book, but the book was too bogged down with tedious (World War I submarine) details for our taste.  We also would have preferred more character development.

If you’re new to author Erik Larson, I would highly recommend reading one of his earlier books, In the Garden of Beasts or The Devil in the White City, and skipping Dead Wake.

“White Christmas” Dinner Party

white Christmas table theme

Some info about our Gourmet Group:  We are 4 couples who enjoy cooking, entertaining, and most of all, each other’s company.
We take turns hosting in our homes.  The hosts decide on the menu (theme) from appetizers to dessert for the evening.  The hosts cook most of the meal, but give at least one course (along with all the recipes) to the other couples to prepare.  We love trying new recipes and ideas.  So most of the time, the recipes are ones we haven’t cooked before, but they don’t have to be.

It was our turn to host our Gourmet Group last December.  My theme for the evening was “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”.  I envisioned a ‘winter wonderland’ type of look.  Here is a look at how I styled my table, and our menu for the evening.

I placed mirrors in the middle of the table to play the part of an ice skating rink on the table for my acrylic skating snowmen, and to add sparkle to the table.  I then layered “buffalo snow” across the middle of the table and added various white items like snowflakes, snowballs, and candles.

PLACE SETTINGS

I glued a small chocolate snowman onto each place-name card.

Another Chef’s Dinner in My Home – A Priceless Auction Item

Please note:  This is a lengthy post but I did want to share all the details of this lovely evening & meal.

charity auction item - chef's dinner

Several weeks ago, we had the “most exclusive dinner reservation in town” we hosted another Chef’s Dinner in Our Home.

Earlier in the year, my husband and I attended a charity fundraiser held at our local Jasper’s Restaurant.  We also attended last year and “won” the fabulous live auction item, “Dinner for 8 Prepared by Chef Kent Rathbun in Your Home”.  I had every intention to win this auction item again this year.

You can read my post about last year’s dinner here.

This year the live auction item was “Dinner for 10 Prepared by Chef Kent Rathbun with Wine Pairings“.  Initially, I was utterly outbid on the auction item at the fundraiser, but Jaspers Restaurant was very generous and quickly offered up a second Chef’s Dinner after how much the first dinner went for.  I had to “raise my paddle a lot” against the other bidders, but ultimately I won the second Chef’s Dinner!

And once again our donation was well worth it – the Chef Kent Dinner Prepared in Our Home was Outstanding!

BRIEF BACKGROUND on CHEF KENT RATHBUN

Chef Kent Rathbun

In case you’re not familiar with Chef Kent Rathbun, here is a little info about him.  Rathbun realized his passion for cooking at the young age of nine.  He is a “self-taught chef” (he learned by working long hours in restaurant kitchens vs. graduating from a culinary school).  It was while Rathbun was working as an apprentice in a Kansas City five-star restaurant that he learned to work with high-end ingredients and appreciate the art of perfect preparation.

In 1999, Rathbun followed his dream and opened his first five-star restaurant, Abacus.  After Abacus exceeded Rathbun’s expectations, he went on to open his Jaspers concept restaurants ( “Gourmet Backyard Cuisine”), and in 2015, Rathbun opened another restaurant, Hickory, a barbecue and burger concept.

Chef Rathbun has appeared on various TV shows including Food Network’s hit show, “Iron Chef”.

THE DINNER

GETTING MY HOME READY …

chef's dinner in your home

Just like last year, we hosted the dinner in our kitchen.  Being a gourmand, I wanted the whole dinner experience (cooking, serving…) to be interactive with the chefs and staff.

THE TABLESCAPE

charity auction chef's dinner

I  kept the tablescape simple.  I wanted the focus to be on the food.

live auction item - chef's dinner

Jaspers would be supplying the plates so I only needed to provide silverware, water, and wine glasses.

charity auction chef's dinner at home

I used round (vs. rectangle-shaped) placemats due to the limited space at the table.   I decided not to use chargers because I figured Jaspers would be serving the dinner courses on plates of different shapes (so delightful!).

Unfortunately, one of our guest’s mother had passed away earlier that week.  He was not able to come to the dinner because her services were out-of-state.  So our guest number for the evening was down to nine.

To avoid cluttering up the table, I only set the table with silverware for our First and Second Courses.  I find it charming to have mismatched/mixed up silverware.

 FRAMED MENUS

This year I worked with Jaspers Restaurant Catering Manager, Yvette Openshaw.  Yvette had emailed me a copy of the menu the week before.  I framed one copy of it and displayed it on my countertop.

I put a second framed copy on the dinner table.

CHEF’S ARRIVAL

About 90 minutes before our guests were due to arrive, Chef Kent and his Jaspers staff arrived.  Chef Kent’s staff to assist him for the evening were Yvette, Chef Scott Neuman (Jaspers Chef de Cuisine), and Mary (Jaspers server).

Adding final touches to our salads…Notice how taking the extra step of adding feathery fennel fronds to the plates makes the presentation so much prettier.

using black falksalt

One of the last items (besides basil) that were added to our caprese salads was Black Falksalt.  Black Falksalt Crystal Flakes are a naturally tinted sea salt (from Mediterranean Sea water) that just adds color and a salt taste to food.  It tastes like white crystal salt and resembles pepper.  Black Falksalt is relatively inexpensive and even sold on Amazon.  Falksalt also sells other varieties such as wild garlic, wild mushroom, and citron.

Scallops with Sweet Corn Risotto & Fennel with Truffle Butter Sauce

They say we “eat with our eyes first”.  Well, it certainly worked for this dish.  It looked so mouth-watering!

The scallops were succulent, and combined with the truffle butter sauce, along with the texture of the risotto made this dish scrumptious.  The addition of the fennel in this dish made this dish even more special.

In case you don’t know, raw fennel is crisp and has a mild licorice/anise flavor.  However, when you cook fennel it has a smooth, almost sweet taste.

OUR SECOND COURSE

I’m not much of a red-meat eater, and if I am going to eat a steak I would rarely ever put a sauce with it…

But even with the first bite of this KC strip combined with the hickory flavor and Jarlsberg cheese sauce (fondue), OMGosh, the flavors exploded in my mouth!  This dish was unbelievably de-li-cious!!

I also loved the simplicity of pairing it with the braised greens (rainbow chard).

FUNDRAISING TIP ABOUT A CHEF’S DINNER FOR AN AUCTION ITEM

Source: google images

Source: google images

In my opinion, having an auction item such as a chef’s dinner prepared in a home is priceless.  Maybe your organization isn’t able to secure a well-known chef like Kent Rathbun, then consider asking a restaurant you frequent about the possibility of their executive chef or chef de cuisine preparing a dinner for a donated item.  Even having a sous chef cook a dinner in a home is terrific – after all, many sous chefs are executive chefs on the rise.

Ask a bakery:  Spending a couple of hours baking in a bakery would be considered priceless by many people and they would jump at such an opportunity – to learn how to bake bread, make a specialty cake or other dessert.

Some of My Favorite Reads This Summer

love to read books

I spent a fair amount of my time this summer very happily reading and even catching up on a few bestsellers from a couple of years ago.

Here are some of my favorite books (from different genres) that I read this summer along with a brief review of each of them.

Life is Short (No Pun Intended):  Love, Laughter, and Learning to Enjoy Every Moment

by Jennifer Arnold, MD, & Bill Klein

Life is Short book review

“We are figuring out life as we go, appreciative of all it brings – from the wondrous joy of a new day to the rocky mountain that may stand in our path.  Life is short, so enjoy every moment!”

~ Quote from Life is Short book

This quote is indicative of the way Bill and Jen choose to live their lives.

I’m a big fan of the “Little Couple” TV show, so it’s no big surprise that I enjoyed reading their book.  Learning more about Bill and Jen’s childhoods in the book gave me a better insight into the many difficulties and discriminations they (and other little people) faced.

In spite of the obstacles Bill and Jen continue to experience in their lives, they remain such positive and uplifting individuals – an inspiration for all of us to live our lives and appreciate all life brings.

And the Good News Is…:Lessons and Advice from the Bright Side

by Dana Perino

And the Good News Is book review

This was a wonderful and interesting book.

I think the book would also be an inspiring read especially for young women (& men).  It was an easy read – no slow spots and moved along.  Dana Perino’s passion for what she does (and her love for dogs) clearly shines through in the book.

If you are a fan of The Five TV show, you will enjoy it even more.

Big Little Lies

by Liane Moriarty

Big Little Lies book review

A friend recommended this book to me.  I knew nothing about the book but reserved a copy at my local library.  I picked up my copy from the library and read the brief summary about the book on the inside cover.  I really don’t care for “fluff books” and this book sounded just like one, but I thought, ok, I’ll read about 20 – 30 pages and then decide if it was worth continuing to read.

It was.

This book was quite entertaining and addictive.  The characters are well developed.

Definitely a fun, quick,  & easy read.  It doesn’t have to be, but would make a good beach read.

The Kitchen House:  A Novel

by Kathleen Grissom

The Kitchen House book review

Loved this book!  I got hooked from the very beginning of it.

The Kitchen House is well written while also giving a glimpse into plantation life, slavery, and  indentured servants during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.  Grissom does a wonderful job developing each character – so much so, I felt emotionally tied to a few of the characters and had a hard time ‘letting them go’ at the end of the book.

Highly recommend it.

Orphan Train:  A Novel

by Christina Baker Kline

Orphan Train book review

Well written.

It is a compelling tale based on historical facts of the “orphan train movement” that took place in the U.S. between the years of 1853-1927.  I found the book not only to be very interesting, but a touching story as well.

Saint Maize:  A Novel

by Jaime Attenberg

Saint Maize book review

Fictionalized biography about Maize Phillips Gordon

This book is a different but interesting read.  I found myself quite fascinated by Maize – a smoking, drinking, good-time gal who loves the streets of New York City.  The ever-spunky Maize grows into a woman who helps the homeless during the Depression.

I think it would make a good discussion read for Book Clubs.

Art Gallery Walls

InspirationalDetails.com - art walls

I love art.

I also have a love of art gallery walls in homes.

~

Some Reasons You May Want to Have an Art Gallery Wall in Your Home:

It provides a very interesting design element.

You have a collection of art you want to display.

You have a collection of photographs you want to display.

It’s a great way to make a statement about yourself.

You live in a small apartment and collect artwork.  With limited space, one art gallery wall is a great way to show off your artwork with a big impact.

You have a large wall and want to add drama to it.

There’s no wrong way to create a wall of art.  It’s all about you and what you love.

~

Let’s take a look at some different types of art gallery walls.

Other Tips for Giving a Bridal Shower Tea

1. You must serve hot tea – whether you drink it or not, and no matter what time of day the shower will be.

2.  Even if you don’t have a pretty teapot or a silver tea set (like me), find one to borrow from a friend or relative.

3.  A feminine stage setting works best for a Bridal Tea.

4.  If you, the bride-to-be and/or your guests are big fans of tea, offer a variety of teas for them to choose from.  Use a beautiful box to display the teas.

Spanish Night for Our Cooking Group (“Fiesta España”)

Some info about our Gourmet Group:  We are 4 couples who enjoy cooking, entertaining, and most of all, each other’s company.
We take turns hosting in our homes.  The hosts decide on the menu (theme) from appetizers to dessert for the evening.  The hosts cook most of the meal, but give at least one course (along with all the recipes) to the other couples to prepare.  We love trying new recipes and ideas.  So most of the time, the recipes are ones we haven’t cooked before, but they don’t have to be.

Another couple of our Gourmet (Cooking) Group hosted a Spanish theme night at their home.  Let’s take a look at her tablescape for the evening.  Of course, this tablescape would work for a Mexican-themed evening as well.

She set a very colorful Spanish tablescape. Sadly, I took the photos before the candles were lit.

She started with a bright red tablecloth as her base and then cleverly layered it with a table runner that resembles a Spanish serape.

French-Inspired Tablescape and Lunch for Book Club

My Book Club has been on a “good-read-roll” lately, and it didn’t stop with our last book either.  The book we read was The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, and it was my turn to host our book club.

I have been to France a couple of times, and when I read The Nightingale I could totally visualize the French buildings and countryside as the author described them.  Even though this book was not a happy one, I got so inspired by the French lifestyle after reading it, I was almost giddy to put together a French-themed tablescape and lunch for Book Club.

A brief book review of the book follows my tablescape and lunch photos.

MY TABLESCAPE

When I think of France/French décor, I think of the colors of blue and yellow, French lavender, and roosters.  I decided these things would be the starting point for my tablescape.

I started with blue plates and glassware with yellow napkins…

I originally planned on using French lavender for my centerpiece, but then decided I liked the combination of the yellow daisies and purple irises much better.  Not only did the flowers add a pop of color to the table, but I really liked the look of the bright yellow flowers against the blue of the plates.

Added a rooster, some blue books, and my yellow birds (once again in honor of The Nightingale) to the centerpiece…

Since there were only six of us, I was excited I could use my blue Spode (Zoological) plates.  I only have six of them and ordinarily just use the plates for display purposes.

OUR LUNCH

(Bon Appétit)

What to make for my French-themed lunch??

My starting point for the lunch was to go to the library and check out some “beginner type” French cookbooks.  I decided this was not the best time for me to attempt a recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking (by Julia Child) – maybe sometime in the future??  (wishful thinking…)

At least one of the gals does not like any seafood so that narrowed down my choices of recipes.  Since it was a lunch I wanted to keep the meal simple and select recipes that I could make ahead of time and wouldn’t be tied to a stove after the girls arrived.

After browsing through the cookbooks, I decided on making Salade Lyonnaise and Roast Chicken for the entrée with a Clafoutis as dessert.  I was a little concerned since I’ve never really cooked French food before but figured “what the heck” – we all have to start somewhere, right?

Oh, and did I mention the wine?

 InspirationalDetails.com

A glass of French wine to enjoy with our meal was a must…

Of course, cheese is a major part of French cuisine… Lincet Delce de Bourgogne (Burgundy) cheese on the left above – a French classic triple crème cheese and Chaumes – a French cow’s milk cheese on the right

InspirationalDetails.com

In France, cheese is traditionally served after the main course before dessert.  I chose to put the cheese (& French olives) out early so we could snack on them before we sat down to eat and to enjoy throughout our meal too.

Fresh bread is undeniable in France – I got a brioche.  It was so good and so sweet – it was like eating a dessert…

I never cooked poached eggs before, so I was worried how they would turn out, plus I had to make them ahead of time…

Cherry Clafoutis (pronounced like kla-foo-tee)

Traditionally, this French dessert calls for the pits to be left in a clafoutis (supposedly they add additional flavor) and spit the pits out as you eat.  I chose to bake it in the “non-traditional” way.

InspirationalDetails.com

Ideally this dessert should be served warm right out of the oven.  I had baked it the night before and then reheated it.  Unfortunately, I don’t think it turned out as well as it should have.  I served it with a side of vanilla ice cream.

THE BOOK

InspirationalDetails.com

This historical fiction book is about two sisters in France during World War II. They are both brave and serve important roles during the war but in very different ways.

The book actually got somewhat mixed reviews from my group.  Two of us, one being me, loved the book! The others felt it was okay.  A couple of the gals felt it needed to be “edited down” (the author was too wordy at times).  I, in contrast, strongly dislike “wordy authors” and felt Ms. Hannah was not wordy at all in her text and instead achieved a great balance between detail, depth, and description.

A couple of them also felt there was too much violence in the book for their tastes.  Based on this comment, we did discuss the fact that sadly violence is very much a part of wars.  They did admit though that their feelings about there being too much violence in the book could have been because we have been reading quite a few books lately that took place during World War II and they were just tired/depressed by all the tragedy the war brought with it.

All in all we did have a good discussion about the book (and World War II again).  I would recommend the book!
