Our “Hostess with the Mostess” hosted our latest book club discussion at her house.  Once again, she put together another beautiful tablescape – this one with a Valentine’s Day theme.

Valentine's Day tablescape

How cute is this? Lovely for a lunch with some gal pals!  This red and black color scheme would also work very well for the holidays, a winter or ski theme.

She made the heart-shaped felt pockets and bows.

No detail left forgotten:  It wasn’t good enough just to give us all a candy bar favor inserted in the pocket – no, instead she wrapped each candy bar in red paper and then covered the red paper with another handmade wrapper with a rose and each of our names printed on them (along with a decorative-hole-punched-edge)

The book we discussed was Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.  This classic tale was originally released in 1938 and has never gone out of print.  We had a pretty good discussion about the characters and the traits they possessed.  None of us disliked the book.  A couple of us liked the book, a couple of us loved the book.  All of us agreed it was very well-written.

Book Club Lunch: “The Art Forger”

“You can travel the world & never leave your chair when you read a book.”
                                                                                                ~ Sherry K. Plummer

A couple of years ago my book club read The Art Forger, by B. A. Shapiro.  I thought I had mistakenly deleted the photos from that day, but recently happily discovered them on my phone camera roll.  I apologize for the poor quality of the photos taken that day.

Another member of my club hosted.   We discussed the book in her dining room.  She made the lunch and discussion extra special for us by setting up her dining room with an “artistic backdrop”  to compliment the book’s content.

Loved the empty art frames stacked up on her beautiful antique chest…

Book comments:

All of us enjoyed reading this fictional book based on an actual $500 million art heist.  On March 18, 1990, thirteen works of art were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.  It still remains the largest unsolved art heist in history.  This book led to a great discussion primarily about art (especially the works of Degas) and also about art reproductions.

“The Countdown” – A New Year’s Eve Tablescape

Tick Tock…I love clocks and watches so it was only natural that my New Year’s Eve tablescape last year included different clocks in it.

InspirationalDetails.com

What better way to ring in the new year than with some close friends?!

InspirationalDetails.com

We had four friends from out of town staying with us for several days.  Since my time was somewhat limited having house guests, I needed to keep the tablescape simple and quick.

InspirationalDetails.com

We had other friends at the dinner party in addition to our out of town friends.  Hence, I had to fit quite a few people around the table so I used a variety of chairs including folding chairs to get the extra seating – not the best look but it achieved the purpose.

Christmas Dinner Party Tablescape

Happy Holidays

A couple of years ago we hosted our Gourmet Group during the holidays.  Our theme for the dinner was “A Yuletide Dinner”.  Here is how I put together this tablescape in a step by step fashion.

christmas tablescape

holiday tablescape

As I often do when starting my tablescapes, I placed mirrors in the center of  the table to reflect the light.  I added a vase with some outdoor branches that were sprayed silver, and hung some silver ornaments on the branches.

InspirationalDetails.com

Next came ivory candles of various sizes… there’s nothing wrong with colored candles but personally I just prefer the simple look of white or ivory candles.  Plus I don’t like to purchase colored candles that you usually only use once or twice a year.

InspirationalDetails.com

Next I added two red & gold trees and a red & gold decorative garland to the table.

Place settings came next – chargers, dinner plates and salad plates of 4 different colors purchased from one of my favorite “go-to” stores, Pottery Barn.

I used little rhinestone picture frames for name place cards.  These I also purchased at Pottery Barn for the purpose of name place cards or tiny messages at a dinner table.

Quick and Easy Thanksgiving Tablescape

Last year, we hosted Thanksgiving dinner for a small group of eight family members.  November was a busy month for me.  However, I still wanted a pretty tablescape to dine by, so I put together this quick and easy tablescape.  As I’ve mentioned before, I love to use items that come from the outdoors and nature to decorate especially in the fall.  The autumn colors work perfectly for decorating a Thanksgiving tablescape.

InspirationalDetails.comInspirationalDetails.com

I started with mirrors on the table to reflect the light.  I purchased some good-sized gourds from the grocery store and added those to the table along with fallen leaves and some pine cone branches.  The only other additional items were candles of various sizes.  How quick and easy is that?!

What’s on Your Bookcase?

Obsessed.  Infatuated.  Captivated.  Call it what you want but I am hooked on books…

Maybe because I’ve always loved to read, I find great comfort in books.  I still visit and use my local library.  I’m still a “paper copy” reader of books.  No electronic reader for this girl!

I love being surrounded by books.  Maybe because of that, I have always been fascinated and interested in bookcases and what the shelves have on them.

And who doesn’t love the charm of the bookshelves from “The Shop Around the Corner” in the movie You’ve Got Mail?

Or add some “Color Drama” to your bookcase by painting it all a bold color like this one!

Bookcases with TVs

Let’s face it, TVs are part of our everyday life.  So if you need to, put your large screen television into your bookcase.  The bookcase can still look beautiful with pretty items like books, family photos and decorative objects on the shelves surrounding the TV like the photos below show us.

The next set of pictures are from one of my Book Club friend’s home – both she and her husband are avid readers along with major collectors of art.  I just had to share their bookcases lined with various interesting pieces of art and sculpture.  These bookcases happen to be in their living room, so they don’t hold many books.  Most of their books are in their study bookcase.

Let There be Light! – Bookcases with Art Lights

Yes, it’s an added expense / additional electrical wiring required but it can be so worth it –  light fixtures mounted on the moldings of a bookcase can add so much charm and beauty to a room…

Bookcases with Books, Photos, and Other Decorative Objects

A bookcase that holds an array of books, personal photos, and other decorative objects  happens to be my favorite and what my bookcases are comprised of.  I like when a   bookcase holds a person’s  ( or persons’) passions, hobbies, collections, etc.  and the shelves tell us something about what that person(s) likes to do or where they have travelled.

My Study Bookcases

arranging interesting bookcases

arranging shelves with personal itemsSome things you may have noticed about my bookcases: I like to collect Staffordshire dog figurines, I have a collection of trophies (no, not mine), I have a fetish for clocks (& watches actually), and I like to arrange my books by topic, author, and/or general theme.

You can see a few of my decorating books here.

A bookcase in our family room – mainly comprised of family photos and books, but two interests are also evident here – my “thing” for clocks and a favorite passion of some family members’ – golf!

Personal note:  Just like the Cicero quote I featured above, I do believe a room needs books in it to be soulful.  With the exception my dining room and bathrooms, there’s not a room in my home without some books somewhere in each of them.  I have a lot of books on my bookcases that I haven’t read yet, but I fantasize about the days in the future when I have the time to sit down and read each of them! In the meantime, my books are beautiful to gaze at and languishing on the shelves just waiting for me to read each of them…

Book Club and a Halloween Lunch

Another member of my Book Club hosted our group for lunch last October.  We got together just a couple of days right before Halloween.  I felt writing a post about it after Halloween was not the ideal timing.  Her tablescape, however, was too fun not to share it, so I delayed writing the post until this year.   I do apologize for the poor quality of the photos as I took them from my phone.  Let’s take a look at her tablescape…

COMMENTS on the BOOK

We read the book, Vanished by Wil S. Hylton.  Generally, we felt the book was a fairly interesting read about the search for some lost U.S army liberator bombers during World War II.  We thought the author tended to ramble at times and the storyline skipped around too much.   Hence, at times the book was difficult to follow and/or some of us lost interest.   In our opinion, the book fell well short of  Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand (another World War II true story) which still remains as one of all our top favorite reads.

My Study/Library Inspiration: Before and After

Here is another episode of a “Before & After Look at Building A Dream Home ” – this time our study/library.

The Before

Photo credit: WoodMode Fine Custom Cabinetry

As I wrote about in my previous post, “Building a Dream House:  Trim Decisions“, this photo, from a WoodMode catalog, was my original inspiration for the study in our new home.  I loved the pine woodwork and the general warmth the room exudes.  I carried this photo in my building files for many years before actually putting my “inspiration photo” to use…

First, a quick look back at our study during the building process.

Another photo I found inspiration from for our study – this one for fabric, specifically window treatments, and for the general feel of the room.  I do apologize for the bad quality of the photo.  It is a scan of the magazine picture I also carried in my files for years.

The After

Here’s a peek at our current study – still a work-in-progress.

Easter/Spring Fling Tablescape

Some info about our Gourmet Group:  We are 4 couples who enjoy cooking, entertaining, and most of all, each other’s company.
We take turns hosting in our homes.  The hosts decide on the menu (theme) from appetizers to dessert for the evening.  The hosts cook most of the meal, but give at least one course (along with all the recipes) to the other couples to prepare.  We love trying new recipes and ideas.  So most of the time, the recipes are ones we haven’t cooked before, but they don’t have to be.

Another couple hosted our Gourmet Group last weekend.  Their theme for the evening was “Spring Fling”.

Here is a glimpse at their colorful Easter/spring tablescape.

At a recent book club, my friend who was hosting decided to have a surprise birthday party for another member who was celebrating “one of those milestone birthdays”.  Among the group of us, I think this gal hosts the most extravagant lunches.  She also happens to be a fabulous cook and baker.
