Some info about our Gourmet Group:  We are 4 couples who enjoy cooking, entertaining, and most of all, each other’s company.
We take turns hosting in our homes.  The hosts decide on the menu (theme) from appetizers to dessert for the evening.  The hosts cook most of the meal, but give at least one course (along with all the recipes) to the other couples to prepare.  We love trying new recipes and ideas.  So most of the time, the recipes are ones we haven’t cooked before, but they don’t have to be.

Another couple in our Gourmet Group hosted this past weekend.  Considering the world has been engrossed the past two weeks watching the 2014 Olympics happening in Sochi, Russia, they picked a very timely 2014 Olympic Theme complete with Russian fare.

“Let the Dinner Begin!”

In honor of our USA athletes, the hosts chose red, white, and blue tablescapes.  They even requested we wear red, white, & blue attire to fully capture the spirit of the evening.  This photo was taken in their kitchen where appetizers were served.   On the front corner of the table is one of the appetizers, “Smoked Salmon Pancakes with Cream & Caviar”.  They were delicious!

Divine Dining: My Building Inspiration (Before) and My New Home (After)

In The Beginning…

Photo credit: House Beautiful Designer Windsor Smith's LA Home

Designer Windsor Smith’s LA Home

Very early in our building process (even before our initial meeting with our architect), I did not plan on a dining room in our new house.  Instead, I envisioned a great kitchen space with a large dining table.  Our realtor convinced us differently.  She did agree there is a trend towards formal dining rooms going by the wayside.  However, she strongly believed the area where we were building buyers still wanted a separate dining room.  Ultimately, consideration for our future home’s resale value won out, and a dining room officially became part of our home’s blueprints.

I fully embraced the idea of a dining room and on we went…

My Starting Point…

My Divine Dining Wish List:

1.  A Beautiful Room

2.  Comfortable Seating

I’ve always made it a priority to have comfortable chairs in both my dining room and my kitchen.  I don’t care how pretty a chair is, I will not buy a chair with an uncomfortable seat or back that people eat the meal and can’t wait to get out of it.  I always sit in a chair at the store before possibly purchasing it.  I think it’s important that people (including myself) are content to sit in their chair & linger over a meal for hours.  I want guests to feel comfortable at my table & chairs, and look forward to returning to our home for the next meal.

3.  Entertaining

Since we enjoy entertaining, I wanted a dining room we would use many times throughout the year, not just once or twice – a room that was elegant, but also had a relaxed formal style about it.

The Room Plans

Our very first home had an L-shaped living room/dining room.  I found it very useful at times (especially during the holidays) to be able to bring in a folding table to expand my dining room to accommodate more guests.  I yearned for that flexibility again.  Thus, we planned for our new dining room to be open on 2 sides to allow for this option.

The Table

I wanted a table that was capable of seating 12 guests comfortably.

4. Mixing Chair Styles

I knew I wanted two different chair styles in the room – armless style for most of the table and 2 arm chairs for the heads of the table

5. Color

I wanted to incorporate some type of blue hues into the room.

My Inspiration File Pictures:

As I mentioned in one of my early building posts, I had files of pictures I collected for years.  Here are some of the images that inspired me for our new dining room.

A Look at My Dining Room Decisions

InspirationalDetails.com

I decided on a Louis XVI chair style with a striped fabric for both the front & the back of the arm chairs.

InspirationalDetails.com

I am quite happy with my choice for the other dining room chairs  – the beautiful fabric on the back , the  solid blue fabric on the front, and the actual style of the chairs themselves.

Both styles of the chairs I selected are very comfortable to sit in.

InspirationalDetails.com

After much thought, I decided on an oval table – the Choate Table from Hickory Chair (Suzanne Kasler Collection)

The table extends to 126″ with all 3 leaves in it.  I have already used my fully extended table several times .  The finish of the Choate Table can also be customized.

I also love the fact when the table does not have any leaves in it, it is a round shape – a perfect size for an intimate dinner for 2-4 people.

Even though I now have the key pieces of furniture for my dining room, the room continues to be a work in progress….the finishing touches remain

Valentine’s Day Dinner Party & Tablescape

InspirationalDetails.com

A little about our Gourmet Group:  We are 4 couples who enjoy cooking, entertaining, and most of all, each other’s company.

It was our turn recently to host our Gourmet Cooking Group.  For the first time in many years, I really struggled to come up with a theme and the menu for dinner.  I think this bitter cold winter we have been experiencing added to my dilemma.  It was just too cold to even think about grilling something.  I also had no interest in serving a red meat entrée due to serving it several times over the holiday season.  I did some more pondering and finally decided on a Valentine’s Day Theme.  Once I got my theme down, my menu and tablescape ideas fell into place.

Auction and Basket Item Ideas – Part IV: A Wine Pull

InspirationalDetails.com

A unique feature at our fundraiser event was the “Wine Pull”.  One of the gals I worked with on the gala had Wine Pulls at a fundraiser event she had been previously involved with.  In case you aren’t familiar with a Wine Pull, here is how ours basically worked.

We would have about 50 – 60 bottles of wine ( with approximately 250 attendees), primarily red wines.  All the bottles would be wrapped alike in wine bags (except for the tissue paper – the red bottles of wine were wrapped with red tissue paper and the white bottles with white tissue).   All the bottles would then be displayed on a beautifully, decorated table.

The bottles of wine varied in price – some below $25, most $25 and above, and a good number of them priced $75 to $250.   For $25 a “pull”, a person would select one bottle of wine from the table.  We would include wine notes inside each bag with every bottle of wine (and sometimes cooking recipes if we could find a good recipe to go with the wine).  The price of the bottle of wine was not included in the bag.  However, we did know the approximate value of the wine.  So, if someone unwrapped their bottle of wine right away (most did) , and if they selected a bottle at least $25 or more (which most bottles were), we would share the price with them.

InspirationalDetails.com

Our Wine Pull was held during cocktail hour .  We specifically limited the amount of time for the Wine Pull which would cause a sense of urgency for the guests to “pull” a bottle before they were all gone.  We usually sold all the bottles within the first hour of the evening.  Guests found the Wine Pull to be both fun and exciting.

Most of our bottles were donated by committee members or friends who had private wine cellars and were happy to donate a bottle to the cause.  Naturally, this extra detail helped make our Wine Pull an instant success.

InspirationalDetails.com

InspirationalDetails.com

Due to a personal conflict, I wasn’t able to work on the gala last year but I was able to attend.  The gala committee did make some changes to the Wine Pull and also when it was conducted during the evening.  “New blood” (new volunteers) on a fundraiser event usually bring some new and different ideas with them which can be a good thing.

Cheers to your next successful event…

Auction and Basket Items – Part II: Sports and Restaurant/Food Ideas

This is the second part of ideas/baskets for silent auction items for a fundraiser event.  This post highlights some sports and restaurant/food ideas/baskets.

Sports Items

Sports items almost always do well at both silent and live auctions.  We love our sports – both locally and nationally!  Sports items can also bring out “the competitive nature” of some people and produce a “bidding war” driving up the price of the item.

Auction and Basket Item Ideas – Kids’: Always a Hit

Silent auction items can play a major part in fundraiser events.   They raise money for the event and provide some fun for the guests.  For a couple of years, I was fortunate to work with a small group of very talented women/friends on auction items (among other things) for a fundraiser.  Here are some of the children’s silent auction items/baskets we had put together.  I will feature some other types of auction items we had put together in other blog posts.

InspirationalDetails.com

We did two Lil’ Baker Baskets for kids.  This one was geared for a girl.  We stocked this basket with all sorts of baking items such as cake mixes, a child’s rolling-pin, chocolate and peanut butter chips, and cookie cutters.  We also included “cupcake couture” items like sprinkles, icings, and pretty yellow bloomin’ (flower) cupcake wrappers.  A teddy bear was put in the basket too.

If you would like to know more about how to build a basket like this one or others, please click here for my previous blog post, “Kids’ Party Ideas“.

InspirationalDetails.com

This Lil’ Baker Basket was geared towards a boy.  We stocked the basket with all sorts of fun baking items such as cake mix, a child’s rolling-pin, sprinkles, cupcake wrappers, icing, cookie cutters, chocolate and butterscotch chips.  We also included a cupcake stand with this basket.  We topped off the wrapped basket with a “squishy guy”!

InspirationalDetails.com

The 2 baskets after being set up for display and ready-for-bidding at the fundraiser event.  One of my co-workers had sewed darling aprons that were included as part of each basket.  As you can see from the photo, she sewed a blue apron for the boy and a pink one for the girls’ basket.

InspirationalDetails.com

Another year we had a great basket of  books for the auction.  We took a large laundry basket (stuffed the bottom of it to give the items height) and filled it with all kinds of wonderful & favorite books for kids.  We added some fun goodies to the basket too.

InspirationalDetails.com

All set up at the auction…

Inspirationaldetails.com

You may want to consider having some Lil’ Artists Baskets such as we had:  “For the Young Monet”, “Young Picasso”, and “Young Renoir”.  These baskets included everything for a budding artist to get started such as animal and funny people sketch books, a doodle book, modeling clay, paint posters, watercolor paints, and drawing pencils.  Once we set these up for display at the event, we added some actual (used)  artist sketch pads and watercolor crayons for interest.  Lil’ Artist Baskets work especially well if your fundraiser has artwork as part of the silent or live auction also.

InspirationalDetails.com

InspirationalDetails.com

Another idea is Lil’ Martha Baskets – baskets filled with kids’ craft items and projects

InspirationalDetails.com

How about a “priceless item” like a “Girls’ Cheer Party (or Poms, etc.)”?!  This item is particularly great for a school-type fundraiser.  Ask 3-4 cheerleaders from your local high school to volunteer, and teach cheer and dance moves for 1 – 1 1/2 hours at the party.

Both parents and grandparents love to come home from a fundraiser event with a special something for their kids or grandbabies…

Pantry Door Madness…

A place for everything and everything in it place…

Pantries have been around for centuries…

Brief History of Pantries

The word pantry comes from an old French term “panterie” (meaning from “pain”), the French word for bread.  In America, pantries evolved during colonial times.  Colonists started building a small room in their homes called butteries (more commonly referred to as “butt’ry”).  These rooms were built for food storage and were located near the kitchen in a cold, north corner of their homes.

Photo credit: "The Pantry Its History and Modern Uses" by Catherine Seiberling Pond

Photo credit: “The Pantry Its History and Modern Uses” by Catherine Seiberling Pond

In the 1950’s, pantries started disappearing in American households.  Some of the main reasons this occurred was due to the food shortage during World War II, people started getting everything they needed at the local market, and more food was being processed.

However since the 1990’s, walk-in pantries started making a comeback and are now one of the most requested features in American homes today.   Homeowners now expect more from their pantries also.  It can be a storeroom or even a large cabinet for many things including canned goods, cookbooks, dishes, and small appliances.  It no longer needs to be located near the kitchen.  Pantries are now often located in basements.

If you would like to read much more on the history of pantries, I would highly recommend reading the book, “The Pantry Its History and Modern Uses” by Catherine Seiberling Pond.

The Pantry Book

My Pantry Madness Begins

Several years ago during the process of searching for a home, we looked at an existing home that was for sale.  There was not much we liked about the house, but I fell in love with the door for the walk-in pantry in the house and thus began “my madness”.  The door appeared to be quite old and was made of solid wood with carvings in it.  Since then, I became obsessed with having a unique pantry door.  (Regrettably, I never took a photo of the door.)

Fortunately for me, the building plans for our new home included a walk-in pantry and it needed a door.

When it came time in our building process to look for “my unique pantry door”, Lucia (my designer) and I started our search at a local salvage dealer, Adkins Architectural AntiquesAdkins has an extraordinary selection of older house and garden items including windows, mantels, drawer hardware, garden furniture, bathtubs, and, of course, doors.  They have lots of old doors which are usually stacked up by general size.

InspirationalDetails.com

InspirationalDetails.com

InspirationalDetails.com

It definitely takes time and effort to look through them all…

InspirationalDetails.com

I wanted a door like this one with charm to it.  We actually saw one door with a mailbox in it which I absolutely loved.  (I do not have a photo of it.)

By this time in the building process, the door frame for the pantry had already been framed out, and none of the doors we really liked at Adkins met the needed specifications.  Most of the doors (since they were old) were too short.  Lucia and I did discuss possibly bringing the door frame down or adding a transom but decided it would make the pantry feel too small.  More months passed…no door…more looking…more brainstorming…

lists

We finally decided the best solution would be to “build our own door”.  The first thing we did was to make a list of what I loved about other doors I had seen and what to incorporate into a new one.  I planned on the actual pantry being a “pretty pantry” and not just a “storeroom”.  So the first things on my wish list was the upper half of the door would be open (glass, wire, etc.?) and the door would be made of wood.  Other items that got added to my list were it would have “carvings”, a mailbox, and I wanted it to “look old”.  I also loved the idea of having a doorknob in the middle of the door, but we eventually eliminated this idea due to the mailbox and practicality.  Lucia did a preliminary sketch of the door.

Next, Lucia and I went to a shop to select the onlays (applique millwork) for the door.  We  decided on using heavy chicken wire in the upper half.  I searched the internet and found an antique mailbox slot I loved.  Now that we had the specific sizes of the actual items that would be used on the door, Lucia was able to sketch out the door to scale.

Are You Designing a Pantry Now or in the Future? – Here Are  Some Things You May Want to Consider…

What types of items do you want to store in it?  How accessible is  the location to your kitchen?

Open (adjustable) shelving?  Leave the bottom 3 feet or so without shelving for cases of water or soda?

Do you want to line the shelves with pretty paper?

Is display of your items important to you?

Use of baskets –   Pro: Keeps items hidden & neat looking ; Cons:  You have to remember what is in the baskets and they also can limit the size of items that are put into the baskets

Do you want drawers for items such as silverware or linens?

Do you want cabinets – they can hide unsightly items not used often or hide small appliances?

Ok, this one is “To Die For”…

The Butler’s Pantry

Historically, the butler’s pantry was used for the storage of serving pieces and the washing, polishing, and counting of silver.  European butlers often slept in the pantry since it was part of their job to guard the silver and liquor.  During Victorian times, the butler’s pantry was a buffer between the service area of a kitchen and the dining room where a dinner party was taking place.

Nowadays, a butler’s pantry  is mainly used to store serving items rather than food items.  It is usually located between the kitchen and the dining room.  It typically has a countertop, and maybe a small sink, to prepare and/or serve food or serving pieces that will be used for entertaining.

Gorgeous butler’s – love the ceiling treatment, the light fixture, and the black & white flooring…

Final thoughts:  In recent years, maybe due to TV networks like “Food Network” or “Bravo’s Top Chef and Chopped”, people are taking a renewed interest in cooking more ,and therefore wanting to store more in their homes.  Hence, an increased need for pantries in our homes.  I hope you found some inspiration (or maybe learned a little history you did not know before) in this blog.

Book Club Lunch: A Tablescape that “Flies” with the Book

“If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments.”

Another member of my Book Club hosted at her home recently.  As I have mentioned before, all of us love to entertain as well as read.  Sometimes it’s even more about catching up with each other and the table than the actual discussion of the book…

This time we discussed our latest “read”, “The Aviator’s Wife” by Melanie Benjamin.  In case you don’t know, this is a historical fiction book about “Aviator Wife”,  Anne Morrow Lindbergh.  Hence, her husband was Charles Lindbergh.  Charles Lindbergh earned instant world fame by being the first person to make a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Tablescape

All of us loved my friend’s fabulous yet  fun tablescape.  It was so creatively put together, to go along with our book, that I have to share it.  Unfortunately, I did not have a camera with me and these photos are only taken from my Iphone.

We saw these planes flying when we came in the front door.  The planes were hung from her light fixture (at different heights) with fishing line.

Comments on the Book

We loved the book and found it to be a quick, easy read.  We also had a good discussion especially about some of the strong personalities of the people in the book and their impact on others.  Most of all, I think we achieved one of the author’s goal in writing this book:  we wanted to know more…All of us spent hours on the internet researching the lives of Charles and Anne Lindbergh.  Some of us even purchased (or got from our local libraries) additional non-fiction books about Anne and Charles Lindbergh.

A definite “thumbs up”

“It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.”

“Tommy Bahama Themed” Dinner Party

Some info about our Gourmet Group:  We are 4 couples who enjoy cooking, entertaining, and most of all, each other’s company.
We take turns hosting in our homes.  The hosts decide on the menu (theme) from appetizers to dessert for the evening.  The hosts cook most of the meal, but give at least one course (along with all the recipes) to the other couples to prepare.  We love trying new recipes and ideas.  So most of the time, the recipes are ones we haven’t cooked before, but they don’t have to be.

It was our turn again in June for our Gourmet Cooking Group.  When I began pondering about a menu and a theme, I knew it had to be some kind of “summertime grilling menu” since it would be the month of June.   I went to the library to do some research and look through various cookbooks.  One of the cookbooks I came across and checked out was “Tommy Bahama:  Life is One Long Weekend”.  My family happens to love the food and atmosphere at Tommy Bahama’s Restaurants.  So, when I got home and really spent time looking through the cookbook and the recipes inside it, I knew I found my basic menu and theme.

I even found inspiration in Tommy Bahamas’ philosophy:

~ Relax ~

~ Slow Down ~

~ Life is One Long Weekend ~

This is the invitation I sent to the other couples.  The recipe that each couple was responsible for making was also noted on their actual invitation.

Once again, I started my entertaining backdrop at my foyer chest with some tropical flowers and seashells.

I thought the frog and my son’s djembe worked in quite well with my theme.

Overview of my summertime tablescape, “Tommy Bahamas Style”…

I started my table with these fun, colorful fish plates I had purchased from Pottery Barn about 10 years ago.

I used good-sized shells for place cards.

I put pink orchids (phalaenopsis) in the shells for each female.

I added colored napkins and placemats.  I varied the colors of each plate, napkin, and placemat at each setting to make the table more colorful.

The napkins and placements are also from Pottery Barn purchased at the same time as the plates.  I find Pottery Barn is a great source for entertaining items or for a special detail(s) I may want to add  – at a reasonable price.

Down the center of my table I added lots of fun summer type items starting with a fishing net purchased from Michaels (craft store).

I had to include some bananas and pineapple to the tablescape.  What would summer be without some sunglasses?  And of course, no tropical or beach party should be without those colored paper umbrellas…

The wooden fish hung in my son’s bedroom for many years.  I loved adding my “Impression” Sid Dickens tile to the table.  On the back of the tile, it reads:

Be adventurous; travel far.

Leave a quiet imprint worthy of this life.”

The tile is also symbolic of my love for travel.

Lots of white candles…colored votives… seashells scattered across the table…glass balls…I also put lots of shells into the bottom of vessel containing the large center candle…

I hung small colored hanging votives and paper lanterns from my light fixture.  I’ve used the paper lanterns outdoors at many parties in the past.I continued my theme on the chest in my dining room…

Comments About the Menu:

Both entrees, the Trinidad Tuna and the Island Cowboy (steak), as well as the Baby Bok Choy & Shitakes were recipes from Tommy Bahama’s Cookbook.   The “finishing touch”, Pina Colada Cake, also came from their cookbook.  This dessert is “to-die-for” whether you make it at home or eat it in their restaurant!

“Seafood Festival”

Here’s another dinner party menu which would work well during the summer or anytime throughout the year.  This was the theme that another couple in our group used when they hosted back in the spring of this year.

How cute is the invite they sent?

A glimpse of the tablescape that evening…

The bottom of the (center candle) vessel was filled with sand to continue with the “sea” theme…

Nautical-type lanterns were added to the table…

Colorful glass balls were hung from her light fixture…

Even if you buy ready-made food items from the store, it’s great to slow down, relax, and enjoy entertaining friends in your home…

After all, “life is one long weekend“…
